Amenra, a name to remember. Not because they’re crazy good (which they actually are), but because they’re about to get bigger, better and to make a statement in today’s music scene. Yeah, Amenra will must likely be remembered as a force to regard after the release of the upcoming Mass V, via Neurot Recordings, and of course after their debut show in Portugal, due to happen in our own AMPLIFEST’12.

We’ve been talking with Colin H. Van Eeckhout, the singer for Amenra, and we thought: why the hell shouldn’t we throw in some questions about what they’re expecting from Amplifest? Well, we did. And he answered us:

This is your first time in Portugal, what do you expect of the Amplifest audience?
A genuine interest for truthful music.
We like surprises, but what can we expect from your show?
Nothing different that what we always do. We give it our all.
What band do you really want to see at Amplifest?
Six Organs of Admittance.
If you had to pick a band or a musician from Amplifest line-up to play with who would it be?
Godspeed You! Black Emperor.
What records have you been listening lately?
TBHR and Hessian.

Oxbow Duo. Just thinking about them gives me the creeps. There’s no other force on earth with the power to just blow your mind with heavy-oriented music without being anything similar to metal. Oxbow has no need to use distortions or any kind of artificial energy booster to just get you going on their intensity level. And that’s because they need nothing more than Niko’s guitar and Eugene’s unique presence.
Well, that’s actually how Oxbow is going to perform at Amplifest. It’s going to be Eugene S. Robinson rocking your socks of to the sound of Niko Wenner’s acoustic guitar. And, believe me, it shall be enough. We talked with Eugene about AMPLIFEST. Here’s what he has to say about it:

What do you expect of the Amplifest audience?
I did a solo book show 2 years ago in Porto. Came early. Hung out in the city for two or three days. Had a great time. Which is probably the number one reason I am returning with at least part of Oxbow….eventually all of Oxbow I imagine. But that depends largely on how good the show is. That always makes the difference.

We like surprises, but what can we expect from your show?
Classical renderings of Oxbow songs. Some old. Some new.

Which band do you really want to see at Amplifest?
Bohren & Der Club of Gore.

If you had to pick a band or a musician of this Amplifest edition to play with who would it be?
Bohren.

What records have you been listening lately?
Bohren & Der Club of Gore, Virne Lindt and Irene Schweitzer.

Enough about music, Amplifest is also about other arts. What books have you been reading and what movies have you been watching lately that you want to recommend?
Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolanos. It is absolutely genius. And movies? The Servant by Joseph Losey. Again and again and again.

ICE Portugal wrote something earlier today about Bohren & Der Club of Gore that we must assume to be the truthful truth: what happens in the darkest night doesn’t stay there, because the German act imbues their music with it. Although Barn Owl might have something to say about it, there’s no way of getting darker than with records like Dolores and Black Earth. Bohren & Der Club of Gore’s music is truly about dying stars, light in the end of the tunnel and all kind of fading clarity. Because once they start playing, our eyes start to shut and our senses to get blurry. Gosh, are they good!
Knowing of all this, we couldn’t be more excited to have them over for Amplifest and, of course, to have a chat with Morten Gass about it:

This is your first time in Portugal, what do you expect of the Amplifest audience?
Our expectations are always and everywhere quite low. This seems to be the nature of this band. At least we hope that there will be a few die-hard people left in the hall at the end of our show.

We like surprises, but what can we expect from your show?
Well, first don’t take the word show as serious as in Las Vegas. In other words there will be no white tigers and nor a confetti rain on stage. Just like our music, it’s a very bleak performance, with minimum lightshow but big entertainment, we hope…

What band do you really want to see at Amplifest?
I do not know all the bands on the festival, therefore Six Organs of Admittance.

What records have you been listening lately?
HAARP: Husks, Beach House: bloom, BONEY M.: boonoonoonoos.

Enough about music, Amplifest is also about other arts. What have books have you been reading and what movies have you been watching lately that you want to recommend?
I’ve just laid flat with a nasty stomach and intestinal virus for the last two days and watched one half of Season two from Miami Vice. I’m really looking forward to my next flu.
