Da Austrália chega mais uma banda estreante que pratica um gothic/doom progressivo com alguns momentos que nada ficariam a dever ao avant-garde, com alguma originalidade e vocais para todos os gostos.

As the more traditional styles of metal, thrash, death, black et al, become more and more tired, as innovating and progressing within these sub genres becomes more and more difficult, many bands in recent times have turned to more symphonic stylings to expand their sound.

Not saying this, in and of itself, is truly innovative. Heavy bands have been combining forces with orchestras since the late 60s/early 70s when DEEP PURPLE released ‘Concerto for Group and Orchestra’. But so much more can be done with such a range of sounds at your fingertips, and with the vast majority of metal acts still stuck in the four decades plus old guitar/bass/drums formula, bands with the courage and skill to take their sound into these areas are sounding fresh, new and vibrant.
Bands such as NIGHTWISH, FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE, OVID’S WITHERING, and Sydney’s RISE OF AVERNUS.

If you’re still one of that straggly, narrow minded band of people who still think that Australian heavy bands aren’t as good as the overseas equivalents, I implore you to check out ‘L’Appel Du Vide’. All lingering doubts about the quality of Aussie heaviness should then be dispelled. This album is world class, and beyond.

Once again we have a situation where a genre classification is hopelessly inadequate. These guys are considered ‘progressive doom metal’, which is all well and groovy. But there is so much more going on here than just that. There is the aforementioned symphonic element, which adds power, colour, interest and a sweeping, grandiose sheen to what were already highly dynamic and compelling metal tracks. There’s also clean female vocals adding even more flavour to the mix (and don’t panic, all you enlightened ‘female vocals have no place in metal’ types, it’s never overdone), non-traditional musical styles and instrumentation, even beyond the orchestral elements (from the sweet strains of the violins in title track to the sexy, bluesy sax in ‘Embrace the Mayhem’), moody ambience, a touch of folk metal here and there and even more besides. At times it resembles a soundtrack to some epic action/adventure movie.

However, I suppose the genre classification ‘progressive, symphonic, ambient, folky, film soundtrack doom metal with occasional female vocals and non-traditional instrumentation’ is just a tad long winded.
Musicianship and production, absolutely top notch. The sound on the album is beautifully clear and extremely powerful, allowing all the myriad elements to be heard. A task that is often exceedingly difficult with such a dense sound and with so much going on. So many props to the production team involved in the creation of this stunning album.

Here’s yet another Aussie heavy band who are getting it RIGHT. Their songwriting and the overall way in which they deliver their music to the ear and psyche of the listener shows great imagination and professionalism, and an eschewing of convention, commercial concerns and the narrow mindedness of metal fans who believe that all metal has to sound like SLAYER to be called metal. This is a monumental statement from a band on the rise.
