" Redemption " review na GOTHTRONIC

The band Heavenwood may be an unknown name to many people but in the 90s the band was a pretty succesful gothicmetal outfit that as Portuguese metalband got as far as Wacken Open Air even before their colleagues of Moonspell. Following problems with the line-up and much bad luck like the suicide of their bass player, they called it quits. Until Eernesto Guerra (vocals), Ricardo Dias (vocals, guitars) and Bruno Silva (guitars) joined up with session bassist Hugo Pires and drummer Daniel Cardoso and decided to record a new album. The sound of Heavenwood immediately brings the listener back to the 90s. As such this is an advantage since it shows what quality gothicmetal stood for in those days. Excellent vocals and grunts combined with low-pitched guitars in the sound of Heavenwood returns the success days of the early times of bands like Tristania and Theatre of Tragedy. This is also the merit of Heavenwood since otherwise they do not have anything special on offer. What they do is very good though and if you are a fan of heavy but spherical gothicmetal this is more than just another good release. As a bonus you also get guest contributions from a.o. Jeff Waters (Annihilator), Gus G (Firewind) and Tijs Vanneste (Oceans of Sadness).

Bridge To Neverland to jak rozpędzający się pociąg pancerny z Jeffem Watersem (ANNIHILATOR) w lokomotywie. Przepotężny numer w stylu klasycznego death metalu z dawką melodii tak znakomitej że ci obecni "miszczowie" MDM powinni rozejść sie do swoich codziennych zajeć a ludzie z OBITUARY I UNLEASHED -tylko przyklasnąć.
Forecluse to z kolei potężne sabbathowskie riffy w połączeniu z manierą paradajsów.
13 Moon zamyka album i jest jakby bardziej klasyczny w konwencji gothic - dając chwilę wytchnienia po tej dawce ciężkiego klimatycznego grania.

A jamais enfouis, je n’en suis pas si sûr, malgré tout le respect que je dois à l’auteur à qui j’emprunte cette citation. Les flibustiers disparus en mer refont régulièrement surface. Le résultat est plus ou moins heureux. Les plus célèbres déclenchent l’enthousiasme des aficionados ou les huées de la foule grondante qui les taxe d’opportunisme.

Et le phénomène vient à toucher des boucaniers de moindre renommée, qui autrefois dans l’ombre des héros, accomplirent tout de même de beaux exploits. Le nom d’Heavenwood, puisqu’il s’agit d’eux, me ramène en un temps où des navires nommés The Sins Of Thy Beloved ou Evereve comblaient de bonheur votre serviteur alors avide de mélancolie. L’appel du large, la douce désolation de profondeurs insondables…

A mon grand dam, après deux très bons albums, les fiers Portugais et leur Metal Gothique sombraient dans l’oubli sans faire trop de vague. Mais voici qu’après dix ans de silence, j’aperçois cette fière armada, bien qu’amputée d’une bonne partie de son équipage, se dessiner de nouveau sur l’horizon. Et le vent qui gonfle leurs voiles me fait frissonner.

Les marins Lusitaniens ont incontestablement pris de la bouteille. Comme des flacons de vin précieux bercés dans de sombres cales, ils se sont bonifiés : les guitares se sont alourdies et canonnent des bordées de riffs puissants, les vocaux clairs et growlés déjà très soignés à l’époque ont gagné en maturité, une voix féminine intervient judicieusement de temps à autre, le clavier quant à lui se fait beaucoup plus discret. Je regrette cependant que les sonorités du piano très présentes sur SWALLOW aient totalement disparu.

Ce qui n’a pas changé en revanche, c’est la capacité du groupe à me fasciner : la mélodie omniprésente grâce à des leads efficaces, les refrains entraînants, le soin permanent du groupe à évoquer des ambiances enfiévrées, ces clair obscurs dont ils ont le secret et qui oscillent entre énergie et recueillement. Si les couleurs des pavillons se font moins flamboyantes qu’auparavant, eu égard à l’âge du capitaine qui a évidemment pris de la bouteille et s’est assagi, les océans qu’Heavenwood sillonne se révèlent toujours aussi captivants. Sur le port, on parle de REDEMPTION comme d’un trésor."

Ten years have been the Portuguese Heavenwood for her third album time, so no question of a new beginning for the Gothic metal must speak. Heavenwood that while little of their class have lost - after all were Heavenwood after Moon Spell times as the best and most hopeful Portuguese band - make equal the first sounds of the Open "13th Moon" clear. Powerful production, gloomy atmosphere and great melodies, Heavenwood have forgotten nothing and fortunately all the musical currents of the past decade deliberately closed. Elfengeträller no, no escalating orchestral arrangements, pure Gothic Metal is the watchword and there are Heavenwood obviously still the master chefs. 'Bridge' probably sums up all the strengths of the best band together, because the melodic guitars, the first-class singing and the gloomy atmosphere merge into an almost perfect unity, which unfortunately in this form only very rarely gets offered. By Gus G. (Firestone wind) and Jeff Waters (Annihilator), are also prominent reinforcement into the studio loaded. "Redemption" is Gothic Metal pure and unadulterated and those who once again genuine and wants to enjoy with class, the Heavenwood is highly recommended. Terrific comeback.

There are coincidences! On Monday I had once again to the band from Portugal thought. They did a decade ago with "SMALLOW" the Gothic DARK METAL album of the year brought out. After all, bands like Moon Spell, Tiamat, Paradise Lost, Samael into the barriers referenced. Damsls we were sure all those who have seen live band, which will be the new power at the Gothic Metal horizons.

But unfortunately, black clouds quickly moved on, in the band rumorte it. After many line-up bills sparked the band on. Now out of nowhere, they are back.

The precise moment when I asked what the Portuguese are now sympathetic drive, came a news report about the new album on purely email. Clear case of this album is head case and was immediately requested.

Since yesterday routiert it in my stereo. Although almost 10 years they were away, one has the impression the band had never disappeared. How then did you also once again succeeded the Gothic Metal album of the year yourself. Admittedly, it was difficult this year. Moon Spell and Paradise Lost have good CDs recorded but the class of the past no longer reach them. A large part of the competition nerve with female voices attacks. The only exception Lacuna Coil.

Perhaps it HEAVENWOOD the genre back impetus, as ever.

While we recognize at the first sound, that it is acting Heavenwood. Wonderful dark vocals, paired with very beautiful almost verträumet guitar melodies with a slight impact keyboard. The keyboard is only in phases, and never dominates the sound.

Unlike SMALLOW leave it Heavenwood sometimes creak and even put Crowle A. Memories of old Amorphis and Paradise Lost are awake.

Very nice also doomigen long pieces. Even the guest appearances by Jeff Waters, Gus G. REDEMPTION ensure that genuine recovery is resurrection.

REDTEMPTION is the perfect CD for today's weather is stormy, it regent, but sometimes dares a ray of sunshine and clear autumn According shines golden. Before the snow this beauty überstrahlt. But then the approaching winter and its cold will dominate everything.

Exactly these moods gives this CD, just hope we do not again have to wait 10 years

Die portugiesischen Düster Metaller HEAVENWOOD kehren nach 10 Jahren Pause auch wieder zurück und legen mit "Redemption" ihr drittes Album vor, welches nahtlos an die tollen ersten beiden Veröffentlichungen "Diva" (1996) und "Swallow" (1998) anschließt. Immer im Schatten von MOONSPELL avancierte man damals zur treibenden Zweitkraft mit wesentlich metallischerem Anteil und zockte als erste portugiesische Band in Wacken! War man damals noch fett auf Massacre Records unterwegs, so muss man jetzt kleinste Brötchen backen. Was allerdings der geilen Mucke keinen Abbruch tut!

Der treibende Opener "13th Moon" überzeugt sofort mit dem altbekannten clean/ growl-Wechselgesang, welcher bei dem hittigen "Me & You" noch von feiner Frauenstimme unterstützt wird. Alte THEATRE OF TRAGEDY schimmern nach wie vor groß durch bei den Herrschaften, allerdings verwebt man das Ganze nach wie vor geschickt mit fettem Power Metal. Der bollernde Abräumer "Bridge to Neverland" steht stellvertretend dafür, nur geil! Kein Wunder also, dass Jungs wie Jeff Waters (auf eben jenem Track) oder Gus G (auf "One Step to Devotion") geile Gastsoli beisteuerten. Das melodische "Fragile" ist hitverdächtig, während das schwere "Foreclosure" schon fast in MY DYING BRIDE-Langsamkeit erklingt. HEAVENWOOD entfalten aber erneut ihre ganz eigenen Melodien und melancholisch-melodisches wie "Obsolete" oder "Her Scent in the Spiral" ist mit den deathigen Vocals einfach nur Granate! Steht der letzten MOONSPELL-Gabe in nichts nach und bietet 10 Songs lang superben Düster Metal mit deathigen Anflügen. Das abschließende "Slumber" ist wohl der härteste Track, den man bisher geschrieben hat und eine absolute Vollgranate. Fettes Headbang-Death Metal-Riff mit morbider Atmosphäre, geiler Melodie, fiesem Growlgesang und darken clean-Vocals mit weiblicher Unterstützung, dazu treibendes Doublebass-Schlagzeug und geiles Metal-Solo... das haut sogar die letzte MOONSPELL vom Thron!!!


The Portuguese Badlands metal HEAVENWOOD return after 10 years break back and set with "Redemption" before their third album, which seamlessly to the great first two publications "Diva" (1996) and "Swallow" (1998) followed. Always in the shadow of MOON SPELL were then became the driving force with much second-metallic element and zockte as the first Portuguese band in Wacken! It was still bold Massacre Records on the road, so we must now smallest bake bread. What, however, the horny Mucke does not detract!

The driving opener "13th Moon" convinced instantly familiar with the clean / growl vocal exchange, which at the hittigen "Me & You" still fine woman's voice is supported. The bollernde Dishes "Bridge to Never Land" stands for, just great! No wonder that guys like Jeff Waters (on just that track) or Gus G (on "One Step to Devotion") horny Gastsoli beisteuerten. The melodic "Fragile 'is hitverdächtig, while the heavy" Foreclosure "almost in My Dying Bride-slowness sounds. HEAVENWOOD unfold but again their own melodies and melancholic melodic-like "Obsolete" or "Her Scent in the Spiral" is the deathigen vocals just grenade! Is the last MOON SPELL administration is in no offers 10 songs long with a superb Badlands Metal deathigen approaches. The final "Slumber" is probably the toughest track that you previously wrote and an absolute Vollgranate. Fettes Headbanger Death-metal riff with morbid atmosphere, great melody, nasty and dark Growlgesang clean vocals with female support, to driving double bass drums and cool metal solo ... the skin even the last MOON SPELL from the throne!
