Review da MetalLikey - Holanda

Switchtense is a still fairly unknown thrashmetal band based in Portugal. The band was originally build around vocalist Hugo Andrade and bassplayer Rui Caria. They completed their sound by adding Nuno Pardal and Neto for guitars and eventually Xines for drums. After two demo’s and a lot performances (with none other than Soulfly, Textures, Devildrive and many others) they released their first album Confrontation of Souls in 2009. And now they’ve released their second album, Switchtense! Time to see what these guys are made of!

Clearly, these guys are made from metal. They have a real solid thrash sound. The first song Concrete Walls sets the tone for the rest of the album. It’s a great opening song by the way. It starts of with this epic intro, only a few chords and a heavy melody on guitar, completed by a heavy drum riff. I have to say that the intro is sadly also the best part of the song. I know I’m listening to thrash metal which is often very straight forward, but I would expect a better, more interesting riff. Especially after hearing the solo’s in the song. They make up for this in their second song already. Face Off sounds like it starts exactly where Concrete Walls left off. There’s a lot more energy here than in the first song, which is nice because that’s what I like most in thrash. They also have a few more interesting riffs in this song which makes me wanna listen to the rest of the album.

The album starts to get interesting with Living a Lie. I love this riff! There’s again a lot of energy in this song, and to top it off we have the great grunts by Hugo. We’re not gonna lose the energy either, cause every song from here on is epic! Except for I stand stronger which is again a real heavy song like Concrete Walls. The Legacy of Hate sounds almost like a black or death song, cause it’s SOO fast. It’s only the intro though, then it gets back to solid thrash.

The song I like best on the album is Awaiting the downfall, because it combines all the previous elements into one song. The energy, interesting riffs and the heaviness of Hugo’s vocals.

Final Verdict: 75/100
I like this album. Nothing really special, but fun to listeto anyways.

Switchtense - "Switchtense" (2011)

Review Metal Army America

Although Portugal’s Switchtense start things off slow here with their self-titled sophomore release, it’s the album’s second track, “Face Off,” where things begin to shine for the quintet.

Still, Switchtense is still very much a death/thrash effort in the vein of its Swedish, Danish ‘n Deutsch countrymen, sounding very much molded in the patterns of The Haunted, Hatesphere and Dew-Scented, perhaps with a bit of Americanized groove-thrash-a la Machine Head-added to the mix for good measure.

Indeed, “Living a Lie” and the aforementioned “Face Off” are rock solid examples of the genre at its most memorable, both songs making sure to keep the arrangements tight and in control, while also maintaining a close eye on structure and repetition. While Hugo’s vocals lead Switchtense slightly into metalcore territory with their gruff growl, the vibe here is still very much high octane and no frills, leaning luckily on the ‘pedal’ and ‘metal’ more than anything.

Despite this, the band still need to break out a bit and develop a personal stamp on their style. While shades of Illdisposed lurk behind every riff corner and lead break, this isn’t quite enough to push Switchtense above the legions of assorted practitioners, plying their collective wares at this oft-overdone style.

Still, Switchtense is more than mighty in its attempts, and it’s likely that we’ll be hearing more from the chaps in the near future.

Rating: B

bem ..
boa intro seguida da face off!
((nao consigo ficar indiferente a comparar constantemente com o ''confrontation of souls''.. no geral. Muuuito melhor o ''confrontation..''

:metal:
A Living a Lie é brutal :metal:

Review Infektion Magazine - Portugal

Review Voltage Media - Australia

It’s a fusion that has been laboriously duplicated in heavy metal scenes across the world. While some consider hardcore-infused heavy metal to be wonderfully energetic, others see it as a tiresome mix of chug-chug riffs and exhaustive breakdowns. But while ‘metalcore’ [as it is known] has been recognised to produce seemingly mindless clones, bands such as Portugal’s Switchtense have revitalised the somewhat conventional subgenre.

Since the release of their debut album Confrontation of Souls in 2009, Switchtense has made a commendable impact on the rising metal scene in Portugal. Their latest self-titled album is an extension of their already solid reputation, providing a uniquely aggressive fusion of speed metal and hardcore.

Opening with the dramatic 'Concrete Walls', the song appears to be almost metaphorical – hard and heavy! Riddled with the characteristic chug-chug riffs that are largely reminiscent of American counterparts Lamb of God, the song is a wonderful indication of the musical concepts driving the rest of the album. While there is an evident sonic resemblance to other metalcore bands, Switchtense avoids the conventions of their subgenre through a more progressive, thrash metal style and by steering clear of the notorious breakdown-style of their predecessors.

Songs such as 'Concrete Walls' and 'Legacy of Hate' are enriched with a mixture of prodigious riffs and vocal performances, while 'This is Only the Beginning' and 'Scars of Attitude' illuminate the technically and musically impressive rhythmic feats of drummer Xines.

While evidently driven by catchy riffs, the best thing about this album is a noticeable desire to place each instrument into the spotlight rather than give precedence to the guitar. In songs such as 'Face Off' and 'Legacy of Hate', the guitar solos are perfectly embedded into the rhythmic backbone of the song, allowing for the vocals to take a predominant role. Supported by wonderfully sharp production courtesy of Daniel Cardoso [Angelus Apatrida, Ava Inferi, Heavenwood], the album is entertainingly invigorating, unlike many other metalcore albums released over the years.

Despite the fact the band do make good use of the characteristic elements of the metalcore subgenre, Switchtense’s latest release brings new life into a horribly exhausted style of metal and casts optimism onto the overall heavy metal scene. While the album could be potentially overlooked by metalcore cynics, Switchtense’s fast-paced fusion of thrash, speed and progressive metal should be sufficient enough to tickle the interests of any heavy metal fan.

Switchtense is out now through Rastilho Records.

Review - This Is Not a Scene

The self titled release from the Portuguese metal quintet known as Switchtense, is their second full-length album. Formed in 2002 these thrash heavy Europeans deliver a brutally heavy brand of metal. Thrash seems to have fallen out of favor in recent years but can these five deliver on what may be a wave of thrash comeback?

The comeback wave is rising and somewhere near the leading edge is Hugo and friends delivering a power packed message that their music is here to stay.

The opening notes of ‘Concrete Walls’, flow amid dark clouds of thunder, like a super cell as it moves onto a prairie. As the full beat kicks in, the riffs explode with full storm fury. By the time Hugo adds his raspy vocals to the mix, the listeners are placed in the swirling storm of riffs, screams and beats that signals the evolution of modern day thrash. Pure driving guitars, massive beats and pure diaphragmatic vocals are true characteristics of thrash, and Switchtense has them all. Giving way into ‘Face Off’, their pace only intensifies to showcase Neto and Pardal’s technical guitar abilities. Karia and Xines provide the perfect quick tempo stage for this guitar showcase. These first two tracks are nothing short of pure genius.

Somewhere near the middle of the album the track ‘Unbreakable’ shows the true mastery of the band. Wonderfully complex in notes, riffs, and beats, this track demonstrates everything that is wonderful about thrash. Complex beats that anyone can bang their head to, vocal intonation accentuating the raw emotional stage set by the bass and drums. Through this constant hammering the guitars achieve brilliant combination of notes that give way to ascending progressions bringing us to frenzied highs. This song is certainly as its name implies, unbreakable.

Near the end incredibly pounding notes, in the form of ‘The Legacy’, come to the surface. Certainly one of the faster paced, if not the fastest song on the entire release. Finger speed, arm speed, and vocal chord stretches are the ingredients for this recipe of metal. Even as the album is nearing the end the listener gets nothing but pure maniacal waves of sound. These waves are hitting the beaches fast and furious in a musical fashion that gets our hearts and blood pumping in full metal glory.

Truly a testament that thrash has not died but in fact given a modern day boost. This release boasts twelve tracks and each one is a chaotic order of sounds, ringing in the modern movement. As more metal acts are pushing boundaries of mainstream sounds, it is refreshing to get some nice pure driving music. Challenging the status quo of metal is what defines our genre but there is a comfort in being able to relive some of the root sounds of the past. Double horns up to Switchtense for delivering a truly masterful work that is able to transport us to our glorious past and keep our feet firmly in the future.
